The world’s largest coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef, stretches to cover an area of nearly 350 000km. About 3000 individual reefs and 900 islands make up the Great Barrier Reef, and it is so large that is can be seen from space.
One of the areas it reaches is far North Queensland which contains Cape York Australia. This area of tropical North Queensland is not only an ideal base for visiting the reef, but is also a worthy destination in itself. It’s about 1000km north of Cairns, and roughly 2100km from Brisbane.
Cape York holidays can be relaxing, adventurous, or full-on crazy: it’s up to you! Take in a spot of fishing with Cape York fishing charters or fishing safaris. Or rent a 4WD and explore the rugged landscape.
A Cape York trip that is off the beaten track is often impossible without a 4WD, although there are many tour group and vehicle share options. Bamaga in Cape York in Queensland is another destination worth visiting. Although it is quite small, it offers beautiful beaches and has handy access to Thursday Island Australia.
There are flights between Bamaga and Thursday Island as well as boat access. Before you leave though, be sure to check out accommodation in Bamaga. Although the choices are fairly limited, places like Resort Bamaga offer affordable 4-star holiday accommodation, with many facilities.
Whether you’re keen on just seeing the reef or exploring the many towns, far North Queensland has something to delight the most discerning traveller.
