At the far northern tip of the magnificent Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, are Cooktown, the Daintree and Lizard Island. This area is perfect for experiencing seemingly endless pristine beaches surrounded by dense rainforest and abundant wildlife. The superb diving reefs in this area are the only dive sites where you can find a Ribbon Reef, also called a Barrier Reef.
Cooktown is renowned for its historic attractions such as the James Cook Museum and remnants of the gold rush days, along with the mysterious Black Mountains. There is plenty of accommodation in Cooktown, with an assortment of hotels and holiday parks overlooking the Endeavour River.
Another exquisite part of Australia is Lizard Island. This tranquil paradise is home to Lizard Island Resort (Hotel), the most northern island resort on the Great Barrier Reef. Here, you can enjoy scuba diving or snorkelling in a variety of distinctive reef types. Make sure you visit the world famous ‘Cod Hole’.
Along one of the many walking tracks on the island you may be lucky enough to see a monitor – a type of lizard, hence the name of Lizard Island.
Daintree Rainforest is where the rainforest meets the reef. The only place in the world where two World Heritage sites meet – Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef – this area is an eco-lovers paradise.
When you travel to Daintree and other far north Queensland areas such as Cooktown and Cape Tribulation, be prepared to experience the most fascinating and spectacular wilderness and wildlife you could ever imagine.
